Birgithe Kirstine Nielsdatter Family

Hvorslev parish register, page 43. Birth of Inger, daughter of Rasmus Schomager (Shoemaker) in 1721. No mother is listed for Inger. The calendar is not our current calendar but the date is December 7, 1721.

Birth Hvorslev parish register. Birth of Birgitte Kirstine to Inger Rasmusdatter on February 12, 1758. Birgitte is the illigitimate daughter of Inger who would have been 37 at the time. Inger is not married and no father is listed for Birgitte. I have not been able to find Birgitte Kirstine's confirmation which may or may not identify the father. Usually the confirmation takes place around the age of 14, or 1772 for those of you who want to help find something.

1787 Hvorslev census, page 4. Inger Rasmusdatter is 63 and a house woman. She is listed as "ugift" or unmarried and a weaver. Had she been married in the past she would have been "enke" or widowed so I believe she was never married, in spite of what our family records say. Living with Inger is Birthe Kirstine who is 20 and unmarried. Birthe (or Birgitte) is described as Inger's illigitimate daughter and is a "sypige"or house girl. They are living with a Niels Johansen or Joensen who is 46 and married to Inger Marie Michealsdatter, who is 33. There are 5 children in the family, the last three from the current marriage.

1787 Hvorslev parish register, page 7. A 28 year old Laus Pedersen is listed as living with a family as a farm hand. This would be the correct age for the man who Birgitte later marries in 1799 and we know that he is from Hvorslev. In the 1787 census, this is the only Laus Pedersen that exists, so chances are this is him.

Birth Hvorslev parish register, page 43. Birth of Rasmus to Birgitte Kirstine on June 13, 1790. Rasmus is her illigitimate son and no father is listed. I have not been able to find his confirmation record also which would have taken place around 1804.

Marriage Hvorslev parish register, page 68. Marriage of Laurs Braad to Birgitte Kirstine on March 15, 1799. Both Laurs and Birgitte are from Hvorslev. No witnesses are listed.

1801 Hvorslev parish census, page 6. This census fascinates and confuses me because this is where the root of our last name first appears (Nielsen). The family is living in Hvorslev village and Laurs Pedersen and Birgitte Kirstine are 41. Birgitte now has the surname of Nielsdatter and Rasmus has the last name of Nielsen. I don't know where this comes from. In our family records a Niels Jeppersen is shown to be married to Inger Rasmusdatter but according to the census and parish records, Rasmus was illigitimate and Inger never married. Certainly Niels could be the father who never married Inger. Laurs Pedersen (Braad) is not the father as Rasmus is listed in the census as "her son" and not "their son" as would be expected. Birgitte in the 1787 census was also living in the home of a man named Niels....who knows if he was the father. Unless more records turn up documenting these things, we'll never know.

Death Hvorslev parish register, page 54. This is the last page of the register before the new book began in 1813. Lars Braad of Hvorslev dies October 26, 1812 and is buried November 1, 1812. He was 54 years of age putting his birth around 1758. I have not found his birth in the Hvorslev parish register. Birgitte Kirstine will go on and live until 1846, dying within a year of her daughter in law Anne Johansdatter, and a great grandaughter named after her, Birgitte Kirstine Nielsdatter who was the daughter of Niels Jensen and Ane Elisabeth Rasmusdatter.
