Maren Jensdatter, wife of Peder Sorensen
Birth, Viskum parish register, page 36. Maren born to Jens Jensen and Marie Kirsten Christensdatter on 8 Sondag efter Trinit or August 10, 1794. She was born in Lille Torsager which is how we made the connection. Maren's death record in Elsborg lists her birthplace as Lille Torsager. Scott and I knew she was born around 1794 due to her age subtracted from the census years.
1801 Viskum census, page 8. Marie Kirstin Christensdatter, age 30, is living in her brothers home. She is unmarried likely meaning that the father of Maren and her never married. Maren is 7 and is listed as Marie Kirstin's illegitimate daughter. Her brother's name is Jens Christensen, age 34. Jens is married to Anne Dorthe Christensdatter, age 30. They have two children Marie Dorthe Jensdatter and Maren Jensdatter, ages 3 and 2, respectively. Jens's mother Maren Pedersdatter, a widow, age 70 is living with them. I have yet to find Maren Jensdatter's confirmation record, but the next we learn of her, she is in Lysgaard getting married to Peder Sorensen in 1830.

Peder Sorensen: Older brother to Gedska
Birth, Gronbaek parish register, page 73. Birth of Peder Sorensen to Soren Hermansen and Maren Pedersdatter on April 30, 1806. He was the second child born to Soren and Maren, the first being Anne Marie three years earlier in Thorso parish, just south of Gronbaek. At the christening he was carried by Gedske Hermansen from Vindum, the sister of Soren. Also present were Mads Jensen, ?, and ? daughter Anne ?.
Departure, Vindum parish register, page 133. Peder Sorensen, age 24, leaving to Hojberg parish. He was the 11th person listed as leaving in the year 1829. Hojberg was immediately south of Vindum parish.
Marriage, Lysgaard parish register, page 82. Peder Sorensen of Gronbaek, 23 or 24 years old marrying Maren Jensdatter, age 35 1/2 years of Lysgaard on January 3, 1830. Scott and I searched about 10 parish registers before we found the marriage record. We knew he was married around 1830 because we found him in the 1834 census that follows, married, and with a 4 year old child.
1834 Census, Elsborg parish, page 5. Peder Sorensen age 28 and Maren Jensdatter age 41 living in the home of another family. He is an "Inderste og Dagleie." They have a 4 year old daughter, Inger Marie Pedersdatter.
Departure, Elsborg parish register, page 187. Peder Sorensen and Maren Jensdatter are leaving Elsborg parish for Vindum parish and do so May 27, 1840. Listed in the same column as Peder's name is a Peder Hermansen who may be his father Soren's brother. Peder is 32 and Maren is 44.
1840 Census, Vindum parish, page 15. Peder is 33 and Maren is 45. They have 2 children now, Inger Marie age 10, and Soren Pedersen age 6. They are living with Peders mother Maren Pedersdatter, a widow who is 72 years old. Peder is a tenant farmer or "Huusmand og Dagleier." The 1840 Census happened after May as this is when they moved from Elsborg to Vindum.
1845 Elsborg census, page 11. Peder and family have moved back to Elsborg and will remain here through his and his wife's deaths. Maren Pedersdatter, his mother, is not with them. Peder is 39, Maren is 51. Inger Marie is 15, and Soren Herman is 11. Inger Marie was born in Vium parish while Soren Herman was born in Elsborg parish. Here we learn that Maren was born in Viskum parish and her age would put the year around 1794.
1850 Elsborg census, page 8, family #37. The search for Peder Sorensen might have ended here as his name disappears from the census and registers. In looking through this census, Scott and I discovered his daughter Inger Marie who was married and had several children (future post). In looking further I found a Peder Hermansen, age 46, with a wife, Maren Jensdatter, age 56 living in the same village as the prior Peder Sorensen's I had found. Maren was born in Mammen. Also living with them was a Christen Nielsen age 8, who is described as an "almisslem." Coupled with a departure record of his daughter with her father listed as Peder Hermansen and the death record we later find demonstrating his name Peder Sorensen (Hermansen) we concluded that Peder had changed his last hame to his father's last name. Around this time in Denmark Patronymics was giving way to the Western/English way of keeping the last name. Who knows why he chose to do this midway through his life but nonetheless that is what he did--and it almost through us off.
1855 Elsborg census, page 18. Peder Hermansen age 49 and Maren Jensdatter age 62. Maren's birthplace is Viskum. The family listed above them is their daughter Inger Marie and her family. They are Lutheran.
1860 Elsborg census, page 5. This is the last census prior to the deaths of both Peder and Maren. Peder is 54 and Maren is 60 (She was 62 in the last census so she is 67). Maren's birthplace is Mammen parish which was directly south of Viskum where she was born. I find the census takers to do this often and it may be that boundaries of parishes changed over time or lazy census takers perhaps, I'm not sure? The second family above them is their daughter Inger Marie and her family.
Confirmation, Vindum parish. Peder Sorensen was confirmed in 1823. His birthdate is correctly listed as April 30, 1806. No parent names are listed, and his father, Soren, had passed away by this time.
They have 2 children now, Inger Marie age 10, and Soren Pedersen age 6. 3 Children of Anne Marie Sorensdatter and Christen Mikkelsen
Birth, Houlbjerg parish register, page 57. Maren Christensdatter is born on October 28, 1834. She is the first child of Anne Marie and Christen and is born 4 months after they were married in June.
Death, Houlbjerg parish register, page 203. Maren Christensdatter passes away at the age of 4 on July 12, 1838. I believe a cause of death is in the far right column.

Anne Marie Sorensdatter: Sister of Gedska
Birth, Thorso parish register, page 119. Christening of Anne Marie on 24 p Trinitatis (November 20, 1803). Parents are Soren Hermansen and Maren Pedersdatter. She was born October 16, 1803. Witnesses were Mariane Jensdatter, Soren Jensen, Christen Pedersen, Jens Hansen and Anders Envoldsen all of Thorso.
Confirmation, Vindum parish register, page 74. Confirmed in 1820, this document states her father Soren Hermansen has passed away and lists her mother, Maren Pedersdatter. It lists her correct birthday of October 16, 1803.
1834 Haurum Parish census, page 9. It is possible this census lists Anne Marie Sorensdatter, age 29, as well as her sister Maren Sorensdatter, age 27, and their brother Herman Sorensen, age 22. They are living on a large farm as farm hands in Haurum parish which is several parishes southeast of Vindum. I cannot prove from this census that these are the children of Soren Hermansen, but they are the correct names and ages. This census was taken on February 18, 1834. Anne Marie is married later this year.
Marraige, Vellev parish register, page 101. Marraige of Anne Marie Sorensdatter, age 31 to Christen Mikkelsen, age 39 1/2. Soren Mikkelsen is listed under Christen's name and I think that Soren is Christen's brother. They are married June 27, 1834. The far right column discusses their smallpox vaccinations.
1840 Houlbjerg census, page 4. Christen is 49 and a laborer. Anne Marie is 37. They have one child Micheal who is 2 years old. They are living in the home with another family of Anders Nielsen who is a carpenter.
1845 Houlbjerg census, page 15. Christen, age 55 (I think the transcriber misread this number), and Anne Marie age 42 are living in their own home with their two children Mikkel, age 7, and Maren, age 4. Maren Pedersdatter, Anne Marie's mother is living with them and is a 72 year old widow and is described as a female pensioner with her own farm in Vindum parish. Anne Marie's birthplace is Sall (it was actually Thorso) and Maren Pedersdatter's birthplace is Sall parish.
1850 Houlbjerg Census, page 2. Christen is 53, Anne Marie is 48. Micheal is 11, and Maren is 7. Maren Pedersdatter is not living with them.
1855 Houlbjerg census, page 3. Christen is 63, Anne Marie is 50. Maren is 14, and Micheal is no longer living with them.
1870 Houlbjerg census, page 4. Christen is 78, Anne Marie is 65. Her birthplace is correct with Thorso parish. There are three others in the house, but I do not know their relationship to Christen and Anne Marie. This is the last Census for Christen before he passes away.
Rasine Jensens Husband
Birth, Hem parish register, page 71. Birth of Christen Pedersen on January 29, 1851 to Peder Pedersen and Bodil Christensdatter. Christen later married Rasine Jensen and moved to Sonder Rind parish. Christen was on the tail end of his family and had atleast 5 brothers and sisters according to the 1850 Hem parish census.

Rasine Jensen Family: Daughter of Jens Rasmusen
Family History Library, Salt Lake City, Utah. Me and my three willing "minions" went to the FHL in SLC on March 11 and 12th. Linda found this family in the parish records. These documents are for the family of Rassine Jensdatter who was the daughter of Jens Rasmusen. Jens was the brother of Laurs Rasmusen Nielsen.
Birth, Sonder Rind parish register, page 76. Birth of Rasine Jensen on May 24, 1853 to Jens Rasmusen and Kathrine Christensdatter who was 30 years old at the time. Rasine was the third of four daughters born to Jens and Kathrine.
Marriage, Sonder Rind parish register, page 77. Christen Pedersen, 28 years of Rind and Rasine Jensen, 26 years of Rind married December 2, 1879. Niels Johansen Berg and Jens Rasmusen both of Rind were the witnesses. Niels was the brother in law of Rasine as he had married her oldest sister Ane Jensen.
1880 Census, Sonder Rind parish, page 17. Christen Pedersen, age 29, and Rasine (spelled Rassine) Jensen, age 26 are living in the home of her father Jens Rasmusen. They have a daughter who is less than 1 year of age and is unbaptized. Christen is a farm laborer and born in Hem parish, Viborg county. Also living with the family is Ane Jensen and Niels Johansen Berg and their unbaptized 1 year old son.
1890 Census, Sonder Rind parish, page 4. Christen and Rasine (spelled Larssine) are 39 and 36, respectively. His occupation is in agriculture. They have several children living with them. Jenssine Pedersen, age 10, Bodil Kathrine Pedersen, age 8, Peder Pedersen, age 5, and Ane Pedersen age 1. Interestingly, Rasine is noted to be a weaver.
Death, Sonder Rind parish register, page 100. Christen dies July 1, 1904 and is buried July 5. He is married at the time of his death. He was the son of Peder Pedersen and Bodil Kristensen. Wife is Rasine Jensen. He was 53 years old.
1906 Census, Sonder Rind parish, page 10. Rasine Pedersen (not Jensen) is a widow. Her birthday is incorrect at May 20, 1853. Her son Peter (spelled with a T), born in 1884 is living with her and is around the age of 22. I am not sure what the word is that talks about her occupation.
1911 Census, Sonder Rind parish, page 6. Peder, Rasine and Bodil Kathrine are living in the same house in Rind. Both the children are unmarried. Peder would be 27 and Bodil would be 29. Peder is in agriculture.
Death, Sonder Rind parish register, page 114. Rasine dies on January 6, 1921 and is buried on the 11th of January. She is listed as Rasine Pedersen born Jensen. Her birthday is May 24, 1853 and she is the daughter of Jens Rasmussen and Cathrine Christensdatter. Husband was Christen Pedersen who died July 1, 1904. She was 67 years old.
Birth, Sonder Rind parish register, page 76. Birth of Rasine Jensen on May 24, 1853 to Jens Rasmusen and Kathrine Christensdatter who was 30 years old at the time. Rasine was the third of four daughters born to Jens and Kathrine.

Birgithe Kirstine Nielsdatter Family
Hvorslev parish register, page 43. Birth of Inger, daughter of Rasmus Schomager (Shoemaker) in 1721. No mother is listed for Inger. The calendar is not our current calendar but the date is December 7, 1721.
Birth Hvorslev parish register. Birth of Birgitte Kirstine to Inger Rasmusdatter on February 12, 1758. Birgitte is the illigitimate daughter of Inger who would have been 37 at the time. Inger is not married and no father is listed for Birgitte. I have not been able to find Birgitte Kirstine's confirmation which may or may not identify the father. Usually the confirmation takes place around the age of 14, or 1772 for those of you who want to help find something.
1787 Hvorslev census, page 4. Inger Rasmusdatter is 63 and a house woman. She is listed as "ugift" or unmarried and a weaver. Had she been married in the past she would have been "enke" or widowed so I believe she was never married, in spite of what our family records say. Living with Inger is Birthe Kirstine who is 20 and unmarried. Birthe (or Birgitte) is described as Inger's illigitimate daughter and is a "sypige"or house girl. They are living with a Niels Johansen or Joensen who is 46 and married to Inger Marie Michealsdatter, who is 33. There are 5 children in the family, the last three from the current marriage.
1787 Hvorslev parish register, page 7. A 28 year old Laus Pedersen is listed as living with a family as a farm hand. This would be the correct age for the man who Birgitte later marries in 1799 and we know that he is from Hvorslev. In the 1787 census, this is the only Laus Pedersen that exists, so chances are this is him.
Birth Hvorslev parish register, page 43. Birth of Rasmus to Birgitte Kirstine on June 13, 1790. Rasmus is her illigitimate son and no father is listed. I have not been able to find his confirmation record also which would have taken place around 1804.
Marriage Hvorslev parish register, page 68. Marriage of Laurs Braad to Birgitte Kirstine on March 15, 1799. Both Laurs and Birgitte are from Hvorslev. No witnesses are listed.
Marriage Hvorslev parish register, page 68. Marriage of Laurs Braad to Birgitte Kirstine on March 15, 1799. Both Laurs and Birgitte are from Hvorslev. No witnesses are listed.
1801 Hvorslev parish census, page 6. This census fascinates and confuses me because this is where the root of our last name first appears (Nielsen). The family is living in Hvorslev village and Laurs Pedersen and Birgitte Kirstine are 41. Birgitte now has the surname of Nielsdatter and Rasmus has the last name of Nielsen. I don't know where this comes from. In our family records a Niels Jeppersen is shown to be married to Inger Rasmusdatter but according to the census and parish records, Rasmus was illigitimate and Inger never married. Certainly Niels could be the father who never married Inger. Laurs Pedersen (Braad) is not the father as Rasmus is listed in the census as "her son" and not "their son" as would be expected. Birgitte in the 1787 census was also living in the home of a man named Niels....who knows if he was the father. Unless more records turn up documenting these things, we'll never know.
Death Hvorslev parish register, page 54. This is the last page of the register before the new book began in 1813. Lars Braad of Hvorslev dies October 26, 1812 and is buried November 1, 1812. He was 54 years of age putting his birth around 1758. I have not found his birth in the Hvorslev parish register. Birgitte Kirstine will go on and live until 1846, dying within a year of her daughter in law Anne Johansdatter, and a great grandaughter named after her, Birgitte Kirstine Nielsdatter who was the daughter of Niels Jensen and Ane Elisabeth Rasmusdatter.
