Christen Sorensen Family

Marriage, Hjermind parish register, page 69. Christen Sorensen of Vindum marries Anne Marie Jorgensdatter of Hjermind parish. Witnesses are hard to make out. The marriage is December 6, 1823. I've looked for Anne Marie's birth and unfortunately there are two Anne Marie's---one is from a large family and the other an illigitamate child---both around the same age in this parish in the 1801 census.

Birth, Hjermind parish register, page 13. Soren Christensen is born April 24, 1824. I can't decipher the names of any witnesses.

Birth, Hjermind parish register, page 17. Jorgen Christensen is born September 15, 1828 and christened in the church October 19. I can't make out any names from the witness column.

Birth, Vindum parish register, page 21. Jens Christensen is born August 14, 1831 and christened in the church October 16. Witnesses were Herman Nielsen, Mette Marie Nicholaisdatter, Christen Hansen, Herman Hvam all of Windum. Thomas Hvam of Bogelund?, and Hans Daniel ?

Birth, Vindum parish register, page 27. Niels Christian Christensen is born December 29, 1832 and christened February 11. Witnesses were Herman Hvam, Marie Kjerstine Hansdatter (Herman's wife), Christen ?, Anders Sorensen Hvam, Thomas Sorensen Hvam, and Hans Daniel ?. Neat that three of Christen's brothers were there.

Deaths, Vindum parish register, page 247. This document details the deaths of three of the four living children for Christen and Anne Marie. Jens Christensen dies May 8, 1833 (1 3/4 years). Niels Christian Christensen dies May 18, 1833 (4 months), and Jorgen Christensen dies May 24, 1833 ( 4 1/2 years). No cause of death is listed. There was likely some contagion at this time as Herman Hvam (Christen's brother) also lost several children this same month.

1834 Vindum parish census, page 13. Family # 3 in Vindum bye is Christen Sorensen Hvam age 34, and Ane Marie Jorgensdatter, age 38. Their only living son Soren is 10 years old.

Birth, Vindum parish register, page 39. Jens Jorgen Christensen is born June 26, 1834, one year after his three brothers preceded him in death. He was christened in the church August 3. Witness were Carl? hermansen, Niels ? of Hojberg, Herman Hvam, Herman Nielsen, Thomas Hvam and several others.

Birth, Vindum parish register, page 57. Peder Christensen is born November 21, 1837 and christened in the church December 26, 1837 or January 7, 1838. Witnesses were Else Johanne Christensdatter, Peder Christiansen, Anders Sorensen Hvam, Niels Hansen all of Vindum, and Thomas Sorensen Hvam of ?lund.

Birth, Vindum parish register, page 6. Niels Christian Christensen is born January 20, 1840 and christened either February 23, or March 8. Witnesses were Morten Poulsen's wife Else Andersdatter, Anders Hvam, Marianne Stephansdatter, Herman Nielsen, Herman Sorensen Hvam off Vindum, and Thomas Sorensen Hvam of B?lund.

1840 Vindum parish census, page 9. Christen is 39, Anne Marie is 42, Soren is not living with the family, Jens Jorgen is 6, Peder is 3, and Niels is less than one and unbaptized.

Death, Vindum parish register, page 253. Christen Sorensen Hvam dies February 29, 1840 and is buried March 8. His birth was July 13, 1800 in Vindum. He was 39 years old and 8 months. There is writing in the last column that I cannot translate and likely details the cause of his death.

Death, Vindum parish register, page 253. Niels Christian Christensen dies March 17, 1841 and is buried Marcy 24. He was 1 year and 2 months. I cannot imagine the grief of Anne Marie.

Death, Vindum parish register, page 258. Ane Marie Jorgensdatter dies February 21, 1843 and is buried February 26, 1843. She was the widow of Christen Sorensen Hvam and was 45 years old. Whatever the cause of death, which is unknown, she was a women acquainted with grief. The only three remaining from this poor family are three sons: Soren, Jens Jorgen, and Peder.

1845 Vindum parish census, page 15. I incude this census document to show that there was a young 8 year old boy living with Herman Hvam (Christen's brother) and his wife named Peder Christensen, who is probably Christen's son. Soren would have been 21 years old at this time, and Jens Jorgen would have been 11.
