Jens and Ole Johansen: The last two brothers of Anne Johansdatter

Birth, Gjerning parish register, page 73. Mariane Pedersdatter is born May 18, 1799 and christened June 9. Her father was Peder Pedersen of Gjerning.

Marriage, Gjerning parish register, page 101. The top entry on the page shows that Jen Johansen of Hvorslev, age 23, marries Mariane Pedersdatter of Gjerning, age 23 on January 25, 1823. I have yet to find the birth of Jen Johansen as I have for his wife Marianne. I assume that he was born in Houlbjerg as the other children in his family were.

Birth, Hvorslev parish register, page 31. Jens and Mariane have moved to Hvorslev and have their first child, Johan Jensen April 19, 1823. He was christened June 8.

Birth, Hvorslev parish register, page 30. Birgitte Kirstine Jensdatter is born February 4, 1825 and christened April 17 in the church. Rasmus Nielsen is one of the witnesses. Rasmus married Anne who was the brother of Jens.

Birth, Hvorslev parish register, page 47. Peder Jensen is born May 20, 1827 and christened July 11 or 17.
Death, Hvorslev parish register, page 134. Sadly, and at the young age of 29 1/2 years old, Jens Johansen dies February 24, 1829. His first name is not well seen. He was buried March 3. As far as I can tell, no cause of death is listed.

Birth, Hvorslev parish register, page 52. Jens Jensen, named after his deceased father is born July 7, 1829 and chirstened July 26. Marianne is listed as a widow.

Marriage, Hvorslev parish register, page 1829. I have posted the birth of Ole Johansen in a prior post. Apparently after the death of his brother, he marries his widow Marianne Pedersdatter of Hvorslev, age 30. He is 27 years old and this is his first marriage. They are married November 7, 1829. I'm curious to know what all the writing is in the columns after the marriage date.

Birth, Hvorslev parish register, page 55. The last entry on the page is the birth of Rasmus Olesen to Ole and Mariane. He was born May 1, 1831 and christened in the church June 12. Envold Pedersen is listed as one of the witnesses and was the husband of Ole's oldest sister Else.
Deaths, Hvorslev parish register, page 138. As if Mariane wasn't sad over the death of her first husband, Rasmus Olesen dies July 16, 1832 and is buried July 22. He was 1 1/3 years old. Thirteen days later, Ole Johansen, Mariane's second husband, dies on July 29 and is buried on August 5. He was 30 years old.

Marriage, Hvorslev parish register, page 100. Mariane Pedersdatter marries Jens Mikkelsen, April 2, 1833. Jens was 33 and from Brorup. Mariane was 34. I think this was Jens first marriage, Mariane is listed as a widow.

1834 Hvorslev census, page 5. Jens Mikkelsen is 34, Mariane is 35. Jens is a small landowner. Living with them are Mariane's children from her first marriage: Johan is 11, Peder is 7, Jens is 5, and Birgithe Kirstine is 9. Living with them also is a 71 year old widow Birgithe Kjerstine Jensdatter who is Jen's and Ole's mother.

1840 Hvorslev census, page 5. Marianne is 41 years old. Her husband Jens is away working/serving? in Vellev parish. Her children living with her are Peder, age 13, Jens, age 11, and Ole Jensen, age 4. Ole is a child from her marriage to Jens. The widow Birth Kjerstine Jensdatter is 77.

1845 Hvorslev census, page 9. Mariane is 46. Her husband is away, but this time in Ulstrup. Mariane's birthplace was Gjerning. Ole Jensen is 9. Birthe Kirstine, age 20 and a weaver girl. This would be the right age for the daughter but it does not identify her as such. Birthe Kirstine Jensdatter, age 82, is still living with them.

1850 Hvorslev parish census, page 6. Marianne is 51. Her son Ole is 14. Birth Kirstine Jensdatter, the widow, is now 90 years old. No mention of her husband Jens.

1860 Hvorslev parish census, page 6. Mariane is now 61 and living with her third child, Peder Jensen, age 34. Peder's wife, Ane Christiansdatter is 41. They have four children, Mariane Pedersen, age 7, Maren Pedersen, age 6, Marie Pedersen, age 4, and Jenssine Pedersen, age 1.

Death, Hvorslev parish register, page 209. Jens Mikkelsen dies May 20, 1869 and is buried May 27. He was born in Brorup and was 70 years old. His marriage record said he was from Brorup as well.

1870 Hvorslev parish census, page 24. Mariane Pedersen is 70 years old and a widow. She is still living with her sone Peder, age 42 and his wife Ane, age 49. Living with Peder and Ane are their children Mariane, age 16, Jensine, age 10, Christine, age 9, and a boy Jens Christian Pedersen, age 7. Of note, Ane was born in Hvorslev.

Death, Hvorslev parish register, page 141. Mariane dies at the age of 74 on September 20, 1872 and is buried September 27. She was born in Gjerning and her father's name was Peder Pedersen.

Rasmus Johansen's wife Ellen Marie's Family

Birth, Hvorslev parish register, page 162. I noticed in the 1787 census a gap between kids from 1768 to 1774. This child Ohlegaard Sorensdatter was born July 12, 1772.

Death, Hvorslev parish register, page 162. The death of Ohlegaard at 3/4 years old is documented on this page. She died March 3, 1773. Soren Petersen and his wife had another child in 1774 and named her Ohlegaard as was a common practice then. Other sibling birth records are found on pages 143 (Peter, 19p Trinit: Oct 25 1767), 153 (Elisabeth, 1 Epip Jan 7, 1770), 167 (Ohlegaard, birth, date illegible).

Rasmus Johansen Family (cont.), brother of Anne Johansdatter

1787 Hvorslev parish census, page 3. Family #5 in Hvorslev village is Ellen Marie's family. Her father Soren Pedersen is 48 (b. 1739), her mother Kirsten Hansdatter is 44 (b. 1743). She has a brother, Peter Sorensen 20 (b. 1767), sister Elisabeth Sorensdatter 19 (b. 1768), sister Ohlegaard Sorensdatter, 13 (b. 1774), sister Marianne Sorensdatter, 11 (b. 1776), sister Birth Sorensdatter, 8 (b. 1779), brother Hans Sorensen, 7 (b. 1780), and Ellen Marie, 5 (b. 1783). The length of time between the older siblings indicates they probably had some children die. Ellen Marie named several children after siblings or parents: Her father Soren, sister Birth, brother Peter, brother Hans.

Birth, Hvorslev parish register, page 26. Ellen Marie Sorensdatter is born to Soren Pedersen 2p Trinit 1783 or June 29. Born in Hvorslev. She would grow up and marry Rasmus Johansen.

Death, Hvorslev parish register, page 132. Hans Peter Rasmussen dies May 8, 1825. He is buried on May 12. He was 1 year old. Father was Rasmus Johansen.

Death, Hvorslev parish register, page 135. Birgitte Kirstine Rasmusdatter dies September 16, 1829. Her father Rasmus had died January 2 of the same year. Ellen Marie had remarried Soren Olesen who is listed as the stepfather. Birgitte was 2 years old. She was the youngest child in the family and was the second child to die in the family after Hans Peter.

Rasmus Johansen, brother of Anne Johansdatter

Birth, Hvorslev parish register, page 7. Soren Rasmussen is born February 8, 1815 to Ellen Marie Sorensdatter and christened March 23 in the church. I think I see Johan Clausen, Rasmus's father in the witness column. Rasmus Johansen was not married to Ellen Marie until January 4, 1817 and his name is listed in the last column.

Marriage, Hvorslev parish register, page 89. Rasmus Johansen of Hvorslev marries Ellen Marie Sorensdatter of Hvorselv, age 32 years. Johan Clausen is a witness. The date is January 4, 1817.
Birth, Hvorslev parish register, page 15. Johan Rasmussen is born August 6, 1817 and christened August 31.
Birth, Hvorslev parish register, page 12. Birthe Kirstine Rasmusdatter is born April 18, 1819 and christened in the church April 25. Witnesses included Else Johansdatter, Rasmus's older sister.
Birth, Hvorslev parish register, page 23. Hans Uldrik is born May 6, 1821. I do not know why they do not list Rasmussen as his last name. His parents are Rasmus Johansen and Ellen Marie Sorensdatter of Hvorslev. He was christened in the church on June 24. I think Johan Clausen is listed as a witness.

Birth, Hvorslev parish register, page 33. Hans Peter Rasmussen is born April 3, 1824 and is christened in the church May 9.

Birth, Hvorslev parish register, page 36. Birgitte Kirstine Rasmusdatter is born October 26, 1827. She was christened in the church January 6, 1828.

Death, Hvorslev parish register, page 134. Rasmus Johansen dies on January 2, 1829 and is buried January 7. He left behind a young family at the age of 34 years old. His wife would have been around 44 years of age. No cause of death is listed.

Marriage, Hvorslev parish register, page 98. Rasmus's wife Ellen Marie Sorensdatter remarries 29 year old Soren Olesen August 11, 1829. Soren was from Granslev parish. Of note---the marriage entry below them is Rasmus's brother Ole Johansen who marries a Mariane Pedersdatter.

1834 Hvorslev parish census, page 6. Family #31 is Soren Olesen age 34. He is a farmer and weaver. His wife is Ellen Marie Sorensdatter, age 51 (birth year =1783). Soren Rasmussen is 20 and is a weaver Hans Ulrik Rasmussen is 13. An Olegaard Sorensdatter is 13 years old and a foster child.

1840 Hvorslev parish census, page 7. Family # 39 shows Soren Olesen to be 40, Ellen Marie is 57, Hans Ulrik is 19.
1845 Gullev parish census, page 22. Ellen Marie, age 62 and Soren Olesen, age 45, have moved to Gullev parish. They are family 59 in Bogeskov village. Ellen Marie was born in Hvorslev, and Soren was born in Granslev parish.

Death, Gullev parish register, page 187. Ellen Marie Sorensdatter born in Hvorslev dies October 17, 1847 and is buried October 23. She was the wife of Soren Olesen and was 66 years old. A cause of death is listed but I'm not sure what it says.

1850 Gullev parish census, page 15. Soren Olesen is 50, and remarried to Ane Andersdatter, age 34. Ane was born in Gjerning parish. They have a one year old child name Ellen Marie Sorensdatter, the same name as Soren's first wife. They have a 10 year old foster child name Peter Sorensen born in Hvorslev, Ollegaard Sorensdatter is 29 and is a weaver born in Lading parish, Aarhus county. Inger Andersdatter is 27, a weaver, and from Gjerning parish.

Else Johansdatter: Sister of Anne Johansdatter

Marriage, Hvorslev parish register, page 91. Else was the oldest child of Johan and Birgitte. This marriage document shows that she was first married in 1821 on February 17, 1821. She is from Hvorslev and her husband Envold Nielsen is from Sahl. Envold is an Enkemand or "widow." Envold at this time is 45 years old and Else is 31 years old. Else's father Johan Clausen is one of the witnesses. Else and Envold would have no surviving children as I will show below.

1834 Gronbaek census, page 11. Envold is 58 and Else Johansdatter is 43. He is listed as a Forpagter or "tenant." Living with them is Envold's son Niels Envoldsen, age 24, from his prior marriage. If Envold and Else had any surviving children they would have been listed in this census with them as they oldest would have been 13 years old and likely not have left the home yet to work.

1840 Gronbaek census, page 14. Envold is 64 and Else is 48. They do have a foster child named Anne Johansen living with them, age 4.

1845 Gronbaek census, page 13. Envold is 68 and Else is 56. They continue to live in Naderup village. His birthplace is Ladding parish in the county of Aarhuus. Else was born in Hvorslev parish.

Ole Johansen: The lost son

Birth, Houlbjerg parish register, page 31. This discovery was awesome. In new family search Johan Clausen and his wife Birgitte Jensdatter are listed as having five children. They have a child name Ole who was born in 1797 and died in 1801. I assumed they then had only four surviving children. As I was searching through the marriage records from their children in the Hvorslev parish register, I noticed that there was a marriage record for Ole Johansen (see below). Since this was such a unique name I at first thought that I was mistaken on Ole's death. I went back to the Houlbjerg parish register and found this record. In 1802 on October 10, an Ole Johansen is born to Johan Clausen and Berret Jensdatter. What genealogic gold! This follows a pattern I've noticed that if a child dies, a subsequent child is given that same name.

Hvorslev parish register, page 98. Marriage of Ole Johansen of Hvorslev, age 27, to Mariane Pedersdatter from Hvorslev, age 30. I cannot make out the names of the witnesses. The date was November 7.

Johan Clausen Family

Marriage, Hvorslev parish register, page 44. In the middle of the page on August 10, 1790 Johan Clausen of Bostrup marries Birgitha Jensdatter of Amstrup. I think at the end it says "in Houelberg Church." The parishes the Johan and Birgitha lived in were Hvorslev and Houlbjerg. Unfortunately the parish records for Houlbjerg do not start until 1797. The only records I have for this family are those recorded during the times they lived in Hvorslev and some of the records after 1797 in Houlbjerg.

Birth, Houlbjerg parish register, page 7. On March 22, 1797 Ole is born to father Johan Clausen in Hinlyuret? Ole is the fourth child born to Johan and Birgitte. I do not see the three prior children in the Hvorslev parish register and I assume they were all born in Houlbjerg.

1801 Houlbjerg parish census, page 14. Johan's family is the second family listed in Hjul?set. Johan is 45 and a small landholder, Berret is 38. They have 5 children listed. Else is 11 putting her birth around 1790. Anne is 9, putting her birth around 1792. In our family records her birth is April 20, 1792. Rasmus is 6, putting his birth in 1795. Family records record the date of February 4. Ole is 4 and Jens is 2. Family records put the date of his birth as June 28, 1798.

Death, Houlbjerg parish register, page 23. Ole passes away May 14, 1801 at the age of 5 years. I think that they are living in Hjul?set still. The census must have been done before May as Ole is listed in it as living. Also, his birthday was in March putting him at 5 years of age.

Marriage, Hvorslev parish register, page 89. Rasmus Johansen of Hvorslev marries Ellen? Marie Sorensdatter of Hvorlsev, age 32 years. Witnesses were Johan Clausen and Soren? of Hvorslev. They are married January 4, 1817.

Marriage, Hvorslev parish register, page 91. Envold Nielsen of Sahl marries Else Johansdatter of Hvorslev on February 17, 1821. Witnesses were Johan Clausen and Rasmus ? of Hvorslev.

Death, Hvorslev parish register, page 130. Johan Clausen dies October 19, 1822 and is buried October 26. His name is the last on the page and his age was 65 putting the year of his birth around 1757.

Death, Hvorslev parish register, page 134. Death Rasmus Johansen passes away January 2, 1829 and is buried January 7. He was 34 years old. I do not know the cause of death. From our family records he left behind a wife and several children.

Death, Hvorslev parish register, page 218. Birgithe Kirstine Jensdatter dies March 10, 1853 and is buried on March 19. She was the wife of Johan Clausen of Hvorslev. She was born in Hvorslev and was 92 years old putting her birth year around 1761. Our family records state date was January 24, 1762 and she was christened March 14, 1762 but I have yet to find those records. She was living with family but who I do not know yet.
